In our next edition of our “Meet the Team Series”, we talk to Abbas Din, who leads the process of optimising and transferring lateral flow devices (LFDs) from development into manufacture.

What does a normal day entail for you?

“Working in the tech transfer team as an assay development scientist I get the opportunity to work through a number of departments in the development, manufacture and release of a product.”

“This also includes optimisation and problem solving which I would say is the exciting part of my role.”

What do you like most about working at Abingdon Health?

“I like the idea that what we are doing in some way is helping clinicians, individuals and nature by rapidly diagnosing and detecting certain markers and targets, giving a sense of care to the company and greater responsibility.”

“The company is a very friendly place to work, giving a lot of time and effort to charity work.”

How has lateral flow assay development changed since you started working with the technology?

”There have been a number of advancements in the design and development of LFD’s: in the area of conjugation and the variety of assay labels available, for example.  This has allowed for an increased range of applications, driving the LFD use from plants and animals to more of a clinical tool. Therefore, the assays have been required to become more complex as well as meet strict healthcare guidelines.”

What are your interests outside of work?

“Outside of work for me to relax I enjoy taking part in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and Jui-jitsu followed by a good session at the gym and then a movie. This has now swapped to using martial arts to restrain my kid long enough to change his nappy!”

“I have also enjoyed taking part in several of Abingdon Health’s charity events, particularly the more challenging ones such as Tough Mudder, Yorkshire 3 Peaks and the Staithes to Scarborough Walk.”
