Medical device bioburden and biocompatibility testing

Bioburden and biocompatibility

Biological safety data that holds up to review

For Class II and III in vitro diagnostic and medical device manufacturers, biological safety data must now hold up to a risk-based review. ISO 10993, the standard for biological evaluation of medical devices, integrates with ISO 14971 (risk management of medical devices), so test selections that follow a checklist are harder to justify.

Abingdon Analytical is building bioburden and biocompatibility testing capability at our dedicated ISO 17025 laboratory in Doncaster, planned for launch in January 2027. We can also offer this service via our quality managed network of accredited partners. Planned services

Bioburden testing

Bioburden testing determines the load of viable microorganisms present on or in a product, raw material, or component prior to final sterilisation or use, and validates that sterilisation processes will be effective. For IVDs, bioburden testing applies to reagents, calibrators, microfluidic cartridges, and sample collection components.

Abingdon Analytical offers bioburden validation and verification services, including enumeration referenced to ISO 11737-1 which incorporates method suitability and recovery efficiency testing, to support sterilisation validation and ongoing batch monitoring.

Biocompatibility testing

In vitro diagnostics, and medical devices in general, must perform their therapeutic or diagnostic function without causing adverse effects, such as cytotoxicity, irritation, sensitisation, toxicity, or thrombogenicity.

We offer biocompatibility testing for in vitro diagnostics (IVDs), including extract preparation referenced to ISO 10993-12 and cytotoxicity testing referenced to ISO 10993-5. Where your evaluation needs other endpoints, we can evaluate and make recommendations for the best fit with your biological evaluation plan.

Risk-based test selection

Validation and verification study panel selection will start based on your device’s materials, contact type, duration and reasonably foreseeable misuse, as ISO 10993 expects. We help clients document which tests are needed and which are not, avoiding unnecessary studies, time and cost.

Routine batch testing programmes

Class II and III medical devices need ongoing evidence that manufacturing remains under control. We offer scheduled bioburden and biocompatibility testing maintenance programmes with agreed turnaround times and trended results, so shifts in process or materials performance are identified early.

UKAS

Accreditation status

We intend to seek ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for these methods. Accredited scope will be published on our Accreditations & Standards page once confirmed by UKAS.

Device classification

Do you know what class your medical device falls into?

Medical device classification depends on each product’s specific characteristics, including results delivery and intended use. It’s essential that your technical documentation and evidence packages are based on the correct classification for the market(s) you wish to access. For expert support, contact Abingdon Health’s IVD regulatory and MedTech regulatory teams.
